Chartering a boat in The Bahamas: crewed, bareboat or a day with a captain
How boat charters work in The Bahamas: crewed yachts, bareboat sailing and captained day boats, where each works best, what is included and what operators ask.
The Abacos are the bareboat sailing capital of The Bahamas: a sheltered inland sea, short hops between cays with marinas and restaurants, and charter bases in Marsh Harbour. Powerboat rentals for a few days are the other classic Abaco choice. Here is how chartering works here.

Catamarans and monohulls are chartered from Marsh Harbour for a week or more. Operators ask for a sailing résumé showing comparable experience and can supply a skipper for the first day or the whole charter. The Sea of Abaco is protected by the barrier cays, passages are short, and most nights are spent in harbours at Hope Town, Man-O-War, Great Guana Cay or Green Turtle Cay, with reefs on the ocean side for snorkelling.
Renting a small powerboat for several days is the most flexible way to see the Abacos: ferries are good, but your own boat lets you hop between cays, find your own beaches and reach the reefs at Fowl Cays and Pelican Cays. Captained day charters and day sails leave from Marsh Harbour and Hope Town for guests who prefer not to drive.
Hurricane Dorian in 2019 destroyed marinas and fleets across the Abacos. Much has been rebuilt and charter operations have resumed, but services and locations have changed; confirm current bases, fuel docks and marina facilities when you book.
The classic circuit from Marsh Harbour runs to Hope Town's sheltered harbour on Elbow Cay, with Tahiti Beach at the cay's southern tip; to Man-O-War Cay's boatyards; to Great Guana Cay for its long Atlantic beach; and to the reefs of Fowl Cays and Pelican Cays Land and Sea Park for snorkelling. Little Harbour, south of Marsh Harbour, has a protected anchorage, a foundry gallery and a beach bar. Green Turtle Cay lies north beyond the Whale Cay Passage, an exposed stretch that should only be crossed in settled conditions; captains and charter bases advise on the day.

A week is the usual minimum and covers the main cays comfortably.
