Snorkelling and diving in The Bahamas: where to go and what to expect
Where to snorkel and dive in The Bahamas: the Andros wall, Exuma's marine park, Bimini's hammerheads and Grand Bahama's shark dives, plus seasons and rules.
Andros is the largest and least developed island in The Bahamas, and its tours are about nature: blue holes, the third-largest barrier reef in the world, the Tongue of the Ocean and the vast flats of the west side. Tours are run by small local operators and lodges; this page explains what they offer and where to base yourself.

Central Andros, around Fresh Creek and Andros Town, is the base for Blue Holes National Park, where a trail links inland holes with swimming platforms, and for boat trips to the ocean blue holes and the barrier reef just offshore. Dive operators run the wall of the Tongue of the Ocean, which begins in about 60 to 80 feet of water, and cavern dives for the suitably certified. Snorkellers see the reef from shallow coral gardens inside the barrier.
Andros is one of the most celebrated bonefishing destinations in the world. The flats of the west side and the bights that cut the island into three are fished from skiffs with local guides, most of whom work from lodges in North Andros, Mangrove Cay and South Andros. Lodges typically package guided days with accommodation and meals; day guiding can also be arranged for visitors staying elsewhere.
Red Bays in North Andros is known for its straw work and wood carving and for the heritage of Seminole and Black Seminole settlers; guided visits can be arranged. Andros Town is home to the Androsia batik workshop, open to visitors. Kayak and birding tours explore the creeks and pine forest, and the island's folklore, from the chickcharney to the lusca, is a story every guide will tell.
