An Eleuthera road trip: the Queen's Highway from north to south
A north-to-south Eleuthera itinerary by rental car: Glass Window Bridge, the Queen's Baths, Governor's Harbour, Rock Sound and Lighthouse Beach, with driving notes.
At the Glass Window Bridge, Eleuthera narrows to a strip of rock barely wide enough for the road. On one side the Atlantic is deep blue and often rough; on the other the Bight of Eleuthera is shallow, calm and turquoise. The contrast, visible in a single glance, is the most photographed sight on the island.

The natural rock arch that once joined the two halves of the island here was broken by storms, and the gap is now spanned by a short concrete bridge carrying the Queen's Highway. The name comes from the view through the gap, like looking through a window from the Atlantic to the bank. On rough days Atlantic swells can surge over the bridge itself; in 1992 a storm shifted the bridge several feet, and it has been rebuilt and reinforced since.
The bridge is on the Queen's Highway between Upper Bogue and Gregory Town, about 20 minutes' drive south of North Eleuthera airport. Park in the layby at the northern end and walk out onto the rocks on either side for the view; the Atlantic side has the drama, the bank side the colour. Do not stand on the bridge or the rocks when seas are heavy; the surges are sudden and have swept people away. Calm, sunny days around midday show the colour contrast best.
The Queen's Baths, a set of tide pools in the Atlantic shore, are a few minutes south and safe at low tide. Gregory Town, the pineapple capital, is just beyond, with Surfer's Beach down a rough track. Guided north Eleuthera drives include all three.
The deep blue side, with surf against the cliffs.
Shallow, pale water in sheltered calm a few steps away.
Tide pools to swim in at low tide, minutes to the south.

The bridge carries the road and has no pavement. Visitors view it from the rocks and laybys at either end rather than walking on it, and should stay well back in rough seas.
About 30 minutes: water taxi to the Three Island Dock on Eleuthera, then roughly 20 minutes' drive south.
